5203 |a"This report explores four potential methods of estimating the number of girls and women currently living in Canada who are considered at risk for female genital mutilation or cutting (FGM/C) based on their (and their parents') country of birth. In this report, "at risk for FGM/C" broadly means at risk of having experienced FGM/C or of experiencing it in the future. Data on the country-specific estimated prevalence rates of FGM/C were obtained from the Demographic and Health Surveys and the Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys (UNICEF 2017). These estimates were applied to the 2016 Census populations counts of women living in Canada who were born in one the 29 countries for which nationally representative data on FGM/C prevalence existed at the time of this analysis. Four different approaches were explored to estimate the number of girls and women living in Canada who may be at risk for FGM/C. Results show that the proportion of them who may be at risk for FGM/C depends on the target population considered in the methodology. Upper and lower estimates of girls and women at risk for FGM/C are presented"--Abstract, page 5.
