The successful operation of the Biochemical Detection (BCD) system depends on the concentration capabilities of the inlet nozzle component. This device was designed to concentrate the contents in 100 L of air into 100 mu L of aqueous suspension, providing a E6 concentration factor. However, preliminary studies have indicated that only particles with diameters greater than 2.5 mu m diameter were effectively concentrated. This observation implies that the BCD will not detect aerosols of diameter less than 2.5 mu m. This limitation is a major concern as it is believed that biological warfare agent aerosols might have significant amounts of material in particles with size ranges below 2.5 mu m. The characteristics of biological simulant aerosols were studied to determine if the 2.5 mu m BCD concentrator cut-off limit created a significant detection problem.
