5203 |a"An area of ground was contaminated from an aerosol of spores of Bacillus subtilis var niger (BG). [...] Secondary aerosols were produced by the activity of men moving and working within the contaminated area, and spores were recovered in standard samplers and on the filters of special samplers fitted to the opening of particulate canisters on respirators worn by the men. The number of spores collected by each man was deemed to be representative of his respiratory intake had he been unmasked. After 24 hours, the respiratory dose varied from 100 to 1000 spores. This represents about 0.0020 to 0.12 percent of the original exposure dose. Even after 9 days, secondary aerosol was still being collected in a high volume sampler operating at 780 liters/min. (Comparison of standard samplers with the mask samplers indicates breathing rates from 13 to 64 liters/min.)"--Abstract, pages 1-2.
