520 |a"The relationship between farmers and their environment is complex and multifaceted. Agricultural activities not only ensure a stable food supply but can also contribute to preserving the environment through the application of good management practices that minimize agriculture’s impact on the soil, water, and air. Farmers are also on the front line of environmental change: their activities are strongly affected by natural disasters and extreme weather events, but their practices can also help to mitigate the effects of and better adapt to climate change. To better understand this complex relationship, on 4 February 2021, the Agriculture and Agri-Food Committee (the Committee) agreed to undertake a study on the relationship between the environment and agriculture in Canada ... This report summarizes the evidence heard during the Committee’s meetings on this study and makes recommendations to the federal government. The first part provides an overview of the contribution and impact of agricultural practices in Canada as presented by the witnesses, for example with respect to agricultural soils, biodiversity, fertilizer use and agricultural and food residues. The second part focuses on witness testimony on the federal government’s involvement in these issues, for example with respect to pollution pricing, the regulation of new technologies, and research and innovation. Finally, issues related to bee mortality are presented in a separate section"--Introduction, pages 5-6.
