520 |a"The accurate identification of species and/or unique genetic stock is fundamental to the fields of both ecotoxicology and conservation biology. While widely recognized and intensively studied for vertebrates (e.g. fish stocks), such factors are frequently ignored for invertebrates. This is unfortunate, as the inability to identify such differences can result in the serious misinterpretation of data. Part of this ignorance may be the result of taxonomic difficulties in morphologically identifying species. Fortunately, recent advances in molecular techniques have made accurate identification of genetically distinct populations or species potentially accessible to laboratories involved in either field biodiversity surveys or in ecotoxicological work. This manual describes the use of protein (allozyme) electrophoretic techniques for the identification of aquatic invertebrate populations. The techniques described can be easily applied to other aquatic or terrestrial taxa. ... "--Introduction, page [1].
