Investigation of the air refractivity effects on IR sensors in the marine boundary layer / by D. Dion and B. Leclerc.: DR52-9/10-1990E-PDF

"Refractivity effects in the marine boundary layer are investigated under representative conditions by using ray tracing. Effects on the variation of the maximum inter-vision range (optical horizon) and the angular error in relation to weather conditions are presented. The mirage formation is also analyzed. A parametric analysis shows that the contribution of water vapour to the total refractivity gradient is an order of magnitude lower than that of the temperature (in the IR spectrum regions free of significant resonances). For the analysis of refractivity phenomena, refractivity profiles are modelled to agree with the radio profiles defined in the NAAWS project. The influence of near-surface perturbations such as those caused by sea state and aerosols is assessed through simple tests"--abstract (page i).
