5203 |a"Hydroxy-terminated aliphatic polyethers having alkyl azide substituents, such as Glycidyl Azide Polymer (GAP), are useful as energetic binders in rocket propellants with reduced smoke and low vulnerability as well as in insensitive plastic bonded explosives. A novel one-step degradation process was developed for the preparation of branched GAP by reacting a solid rubbery polyepichlorohydrin (PECH) of high molecular weight (MW approximately equals to E6) with the epichlorohydrin (ECH) monomer and sodium azide in a suitable organic solvent at 100C for less than 15 h without a catalyst. The MW of the branched product can be controlled and predetermined in the MW range 500-40,000 by adjusting the weight ratio (ECH/PECH) in the reaction mixture. Branched GAP was characterized using different techniques such as low-angle laser light scattering (LALLS), gel permeation chromatography (GPC), viscometry, membrane osometry, differential scanning calorimetry and bomb calorimetry.
