The study is based on a model that uses a seemingly unrelated regression equation (SURE) system estimator to simultaneously assess the impact of determinants that explain the investment of businesses in rural and urban areas and to statistically test the differences between the two areas. According to longitudinal data from 42,316 OLM-owned businesses in Canada from 2018 to 2021, the results show significant disparities in the determinants of investments of businesses in rural and urban areas. For rural businesses, which were relatively more common in the agriculture and construction sectors, expenses affected investments the most, and this impact was much greater than for urban businesses. For urban businesses, being foreign-controlled resulted in an increase in investments compared with Canadian-controlled businesses, and this impact was much greater for urban businesses than for rural businesses. The results also suggest that the COVID-19 pandemic had a major impact, encouraging businesses to adopt a more careful approach of protecting liquid assets in the face of economic uncertainty"--Abstract, page 5. |
