Canadian environmental sustainability indicators : land-based greenhouse gas emissions and removals.En4-144/93-2024E-PDF

"Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are the major drivers of climate change. Land use activities (such as timber harvesting and land conversion) as well as natural disturbances (such as forest fires and insect infestations) result in GHG emissions. Land use activities can also result in GHG removals. For example, as forests grow or recover, carbon is removed from the atmosphere and converted into wood by trees. Tracking the trends in Canada's landbased GHG emissions and removals can help us understand how land management decisions could reduce emissions and increase removals over time. The indicator provides annual estimates of Canada's GHG emissions and removals from managed lands. These are lands influenced by human intervention to perform production, ecological or social functions. Examplesinclude agricultural land, wetlands, settlements, and managed forests"--page 5.
