"This study explores the gender pay gap amongst Canadian board directors and officers by looking at various types of compensation. Research undertaken in the United States found that the gender pay gaps among top executives were mainly attributable to the variable pay component of compensation. Base pay is the component that does not depend on the individual's job performance and is mostly determined by an individual's position and level within a firm's hierarchy. By contrast, variable pay depends mainly on the individual's job performance over a given period. As part of variable pay, and to offer a financial incentive, employers can grant equity incentives to board directors and officers in lieu of a higher salary, resulting in lower base pay. Previous research showed that women executives earned lower variable pay than men executives, contributing to the widening of the gender pay gap. This research aims to determine how variable pay explains the gender pay gaps observed among executives in Canada"--Abstract, page 4.
