"This Canadian Protected Areas Status Report is the fourth in a series of reports that provides a detailed overview of the extent and growth of Canada's terrestrial and marine protected and conserved areas network. The Canadian Protected Areas Status Report provides a benchmark to assess the progress and trends in area-based conservation in Canada. This report is the fourth in the series and covers the period from January 1, 2016, to December 31, 2020. The previous edition of this report covered a 4-year period from January 1, 2012, to December 31, 2015, and the first two editions covered a 6-year period from January 1, 2000, to December 31, 2005, and from January 1, 2006, to December 31, 2011, respectively. This report summarizes the actions undertaken by Crown governments, Indigenous people, land trust organizations, and others to protect important ecosystems, conserve biodiversity, safeguard the services provided by ecosystems, plan and manage areas effectively, and improve the connectivity between conserved areas.
