"Using two subjects walking at 3.5 mph on a treadmill indoors, and over a circular course out-of-doors, with and without a 28 lb. load, and under similar ambient temperatures, it was found that the energy cost was 23% greater out-of-doors than on the treadmill with the load, and 15% greater without it"--Abstract.
