"In satellite Time Division Multiple Access communications systems there is a need for synchronization to ensure no overlap of signal bursts received at the satellite and, for maximum efficiency, minimization of the interburst guard time. The problem of synchronizing many stations to a remote facility is compounded by the drift motion of the satellite. In the CENSAR system it was decided to exploit the economy and accuracy achievable with centralized synchronization"--Introduction, page [1].
