"The over-representation of Indigenous peoples as both victims and people accused of crimes, as well as issues related to accessing justice, are interwoven into the courts process. Pathways through the Canadian criminal courts can be complex, starting where police investigations end and culminating with a decision and sentence. Along the way, decisions are made about the charges seen in court, the disposition of those charges, and any potential verdicts and sentences passed down. Using data from the Homicide Survey and the Integrated Criminal Court Survey, this Juristat article examines how homicides of Indigenous women and girls moved through the court system between 2009 and 2021, how they were treated at crucial decision points along the way, and how their outcomes compared to homicides of victims who were non-Indigenous.
