Fishing effort and harvest reported by sentinel fishers in the Kittigaryuit and Okeevik regions of the Tarium Niryutait Marine Protected Area (2017-2019) / Ellen V. Lea, Inuvik Hunters and Trappers Committee,...: Fs97-13/1414E-PDF
"A program was implemented to collect fishing effort and harvest data from key harvesters (i.e., “Sentinel Fishers”) from Inuvik, Northwest Territories, who were fishing in the Kittigaryuit and Okeevik regions of the TNMPA during summer. Detailed catch records were collected from a total of seven Sentinel Fisher groups, harvesting from the Kittigaryuit region (i.e., East Whitefish) from 2017–2019 and the Okeevik region (i.e., Garry Island and Kendall Island) in 2018 and 2019, representing a total of 669 fishing hours and 153 net sets among locations and years. Anadromous, marine, and freshwater fish species were reported from these locations, with anadromous fishes dominating catches (88.3% overall) from both Kittigaryuit and Okeevik fishing locations. Mean catch-per-unit-effort varied widely among species, years, and regions. Altogether, these results address specific ecological indicators identified by the TNMPA Monitoring Plan, serve as a baseline for future assessments, and inform future research and monitoring"--Abstract, page iv.
