"Folic acid plays a vital role in preventing birth defects in babies. The benefits of taking folic acid are greatest in the early weeks of pregnancy, before many women know they are pregnant. The proportion of folic acid-containing supplement users was generally low among women of reproductive age (15-55) in Canada.
