The acute toxicity of saline groundwater and of vanadium to fish and aquatic invertebrates / by M.A. Giles, J.F. Klaverkamp, and S.G. Lawrence for Alberta Oil Sands Environmental Research Program.En40-248/56E-PDF

"The 10 day LC50 of saline groundwater to juvenile rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) varied from 20 to 35% of full strength, although median survival times of trout in groundwater varied substantially. Histopathological lesions were observed in the secondary gill lamellae and kidneys of juvenile trout exposed to groundwater concentrations of 6.25 to 50%. Gammarus lacustris exhibited highly significant avoidance reaction to groundwater concentrations of 1.0 to 25%, whereas whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis) neither avoided nor preferred these concentrations"--Abstract.
