Ecological aspects of the fauna and flora of the pelagic and benthic environments are emphasized and only limited reference is made to taxonomic studies. Studies conducted in large experimental enclosures (mesocosms) located in Saanich Inlet during the 1970s by a National Science Foundation project, called CEPEX (controlled ecosystem pollution/population experiment) are also included.
