5203 |a"The incidental catch of halibut by B.C. trawlers continues to be significant. The total annual incidental catch in Queen Charlotte Sound and Hecate Strait was estimated to be 1.6 million pounds in 1981-82. If incidental catch ratios off the west coast of Vancouver Island were comparable to those of Hecate Strait, then an estimate of the total annual catch for this period would be 2.6 million pounds. This estimate is lower than those of earlier studies but still large in comparison with the 1984 halibut quota of 9 million pounds for all of B.C. Summer and winter catch rates were approximately equal. The majority of the observed incidental halibut from Queen Charlotte Sound and Hecate Strait were sub-legal with 94% being less than 82 cm. By weight, 78% of the incidental catch of halibut was composed of individuals less than 82 cm"--Abstract, page iii.
