| 520 | 3 |a"A pilot study was conducted to develop techniques for the tagging of juvenile Pacific cod, prior to a major project on the west coast of Vancouver Island. The study concentrated on techniques for handling, holding and tagging pre-recruit, juvenile fish. Several viable operations were developed to decrease mortalities of tagged fish; swim bladder deflation and holding in recovery tanks for a minimum of one hour prior to release were major factors in increasing survival. Efforts were also directed toward estimating initial, traumatic tagging mortality in order to derive more accurate figures for the number of viable, tagged fish at large. Experiments indicated that such mortality was approximately 20% of tagged fish. Nineteen percent of total released fish were recovered to December 31, 1978. Double tagging of 10% of the fish indicated no significant shedding of the standard anchor tag. Differential recovery percentages of fish, by condition at release, infers that even among fish judged suitable for release, minor injuries may lead to errors in analysis of recoveries"--Abstract, page iii. |
