Growth of young Pacific hake, walleye pollock, pacific cod and lingcod in Stuart Channel, British Columbia in 1976 / by R.J. Beamish, K.R. Weir, J.R. Scarsbrook, and M.S. Smith.Fs97-4/1518E-PDF

"The amount of growth of age 0, 1, 2 Pacific hake determined from length frequency distributions was accelerated during the summer months and lasted longer in 1976 than in 1975. Ages assigned using otoliths were similar to ages identified from the length frequency distributions. A year class of Pacific hake appeared to remain in the nursery area until the third growth season. The growth of young pollock was continuous throughout the year except for a change in the rate of growth of age 0 fish during September. Young pollock left the nursery area during their third growth season. Both juvenile and adult Pacific cod were found in the study area. Growth of all year-classes was rapid and continuous. Mean size increases over a 10-mo period were 24 cm to 41 cm for Pacific cod during their second year of growth and 41 cm to 61 cm during their third year of growth. An examination of ages determined from scales indicated that while a majority of the ages were similar to ages interpreted from length frequencies some ages were in error and if not detected could result in misinterpretations of Pacific cod biology. Young of the year lingcod were observed in the midwater in May and in bottom catches in July. A strong age 1 group and a weak age 2 group was present in 1976 in contrast to a weak age 1 group and a strong age 2 group observed in 1975. Growth was rapid with age 1 fish increasing in mean size from 30 cm in January to 41 cm in November. Juvenile dogfish were observed in the study area but year-classes and growth patterns could not be identified from the length frequencies"--Abstract, page iii.
