| 520 | |a"The effects of perturbations in the aquatic environment are assessed by several methods employing physical and chemical parameters, and various biological tests including bacteriological studies and bioassay of fish and aquatic invertebrates. The application of invertebrates as indicator organisms of water quality, often referred to as saprobien system, has been more common among hydrobiologists in continental Europe and the Soviet Union, and it is currently receiving wider recognition in Great Britain and North America. The present survey of the benthos of Lake Ontario is one in a series, conducted under the Canada - United States Agreement on Great Lakes Water Quality (1972), to aid in determining areas of eutrophication and distribution of hazardous chemicals within the lake, and to enhance our knowledge of the species composition and abundance of benthic invertebrates. The benthos samples for this study were collected in conjunction with a survey of the surficial sediments of Lake Ontario in September 1977 under the direction of Dr. Richard L. Thomas, Great Lakes Biolimnology Laboratory, Canada Centre for Inland Waters. The invertebrates from these samples were sorted and analysed during a period of about seven months under the auspices of the Department of Fisheries and Environment. The results are reported below"--Introduction, page 1. |
