"This report provides a summary of the literature on freeze-up and break-up of lake and sea ice in northern Canada. With regard to lake ice the focus is on research into the prediction of dates of freeze-up and break-up, and the use of freeze-up and break-up records in studies of climatic change. In terms of sea ice, the emphasis is on a review of investigations into the formation, growth and decay of ice, and the meteorological and oceanographic controls over the ice region, and the spatial and temporal patterns and variations in sea ice coverage.
