Fishing efficiency trials with a hydraulic clam (Mya) rake - 1961 / authorship, J. S. MacPhail and J. C. Medcof.Fs52-2/724E-PDF

"Laboratory experiments indicate that hydraulic raking does not "wash out" clams. It merely liquifies the upper strata of the soil by turning it into a soil-water suspension with a high specific gravity. In this medium, clams with their low specific gravity float to the surface where they can be collected. Field trials show that in sandy soils our 1961 model of the hydraulic rake, equipped with wheels and 2-inch nozzles, is a manoeuverable and efficient tool for harvesting soft-shell clams"--Summary, page 15.
