This report summarizes predictions of a model of juvenile salmon migration through Hecate Strait that was part of that study. The model predicts seasonal abundance, size, and food resource requirements of juvenile salmon in the Strait based on estimates of juvenile production in various regions of the coast, seasonal migration rates and timing, growth rates, mortality rates, and food conversion rates under different assumptions about the migratory routes followed by juveniles from different parts of the coast. Estimates of seasonal abundance, species composition, size, and food requirements of juveniles in Hecate Strait vary widely depending on the migration route of the juveniles. Sensitivity analysis of the principal uncertain parameters of the model showed that the qualitative patterns of seasonal abundance, size, etc., did not change with changes in the parameter values. The results suggest that sampling at particular times of year in Hecate Strait and comparing species composition, size, and changes in catch rate between sampling times would indicate the most likely patterns of juvenile salmon migration along the coast"--Abstract, page iii. |
