| 520 | 3 |a"Fisheries agencies in Canada and the USA are engaged in cooperative research on stock identification of sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) under the auspices of the Pacific Salmon Commission. To date this research has focussed on the use of four types of "biological markers" - scale patterns, age composition, parasite prevalence and biochemical genetic data. In this report, we describe how these markers have been used and compare their utility with respect to (1) potential for stock differentiation, (2) stability over time, (3) homogeneity within populations and (4) ease of sampling. Selected data are summarized from unpublished reports of the Pacific Salmon Commission and files of participating agencies to substantiate these comparisons"--Abstract, page v. |
