Moored current and hydrographic measurements in Orphan Basin, 2004 to 2010 / by John W. Loder, Yuri Geshelin and Igor Yashayaev.: Fs97-16/226E-PDF
"A moored current measurement and hydrographic survey program was conducted in Orphan Basin off eastern Newfoundland between June 2004 and May 2010, motivated by interests in hydrocarbon exploration and ocean climate and ecosystem variability. Six year-long deployments of subsurface moorings were made in the springs of 2004 to 2009, involving 8 different sites in water depths ranging from 1525m to 3300m. A total of 28 moorings were deployed, with 8 upper-ocean acoustic current profilers, 80 single-point current meters and 68 temperature-salinity sensors, most of which returned good data. A CTD (Conductivity-Temperature-Depth) survey along a primary mooring line across the basin and Orphan Knoll was conducted on each cruise. Meta information on, and displays of, the data are presented in this report. Important oceanographic features identified include strong upper-ocean inertial current oscillations, the Deep Western Boundary Current, and tall cyclonic eddies"--Abstract, page xii.
