Distribution of fish species on Roberts and Sturgeon Banks recorded in seine and trawl surveys / by G.L. Greer, C.D. Levings, R. Harbo, B. Hillaby, T. Brown, and J. Sibert.Fs97-4/1596E-PDF

"The distribution of fish species on both Roberts and Sturgeon Banks was determined by trawl and seine surveys, at high and low tide, respectively, during the period April-July 1979. A trawling effort of 34 yielded a total of 631 fish comprising 27 species. Six species accounted for about 84% of the total catch and these were, in order of rank of catch/unit effort (CPUE): starry flounder (Platichthys stellatus), English sole (Parophrys vetulus) staghorn sculpin (Leptocottus armatus), Pacific sanddab (Citharichthys sordidus) speckled sanddab (C. stigmaeus) and Dover sole (Wicrostomus pacificus). In the seine survey, 37 species were recorded in a total catch of 19104 with an effort of 158. Approximately 80% of the total seine catch was comprised of six species: Pacific herring (Clupea harengus pallasi), staghorn sculpin (L. armatus), starry flounder (P. stellatus), shiner perch (Cymatogaster aggregata), Pacific sand lance (Ammodytes hexapterus), and juvenile chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) The highest CPUE's for seine-caught fish were in areas of the Banks having topographic depressions which remain flooded at low tides. The borrow pit between the Roberts Bank coalport and the B.C. Ferry Terminal and, on Sturgeon Bank, a naturally formed pit (Sturgeon Pit) in the sand flats north of the Steveston Jetty on the Fraser River South Arm and the extensive tide-channel network acting as a low tide watershed draining portions of the Fraser River Middle Arm were the most utilized low-tide refuges. The results of the trawl survey carried out at high tide indicate the sand flats located on the north side of the Iona (Sewage Plant) Jetty on Sturgeon Bank and Sturgeon Pit to the south to be the areas most utilized by bottom species dwelling at depth"--Abstract, page iii.
