Canada's northern security : the eastern dimension / by Nils Ørvik.: D68-17/1-1982E-PDF
"This paper analyzes certain aspects of Canada's northern security with a special emphasis on its eastern dimension, that is, major issues in the Eastern Arctic and the Davis Strait. It also deals with those security-related problems that are relevant to Greenland, our nearest neighbour to the east. The study is divided into three major sections; the first focuses on Canada's northern non-renewable resources. The second analyzes the "Arctic Orientation" in Canadian defence policy and discusses some of the proposals and suggestions which have been made in that respect. In the third section the author deals with more complex and comprehensive aspects of Canada's security syndrome and tries to bring together economic, political and military variables. Special attention is given to the United States and its role in Canada's northern policy. In the final chapter the author examines the two concepts of cooperation and compromise as keys to an understanding of the cluster of issues that are relevant to Canada's northern security, resource development and political aspirations of the Inuit peoples"--Abstract, page i.
