Reactivation of 87 acres of slough was expected to provide significant estuarine rearing area for salmonids and other fish species. A series of fish trapping and benthic surveys was undertaken in 1979 to assess whether salmonids did utilize the reactivated estuary. Significant numbers of rearing chum moved into the slough and were captured during the April and May period. Their stomach contents appeared most representative of the epibenthos found there. A significant feature of the study was that chum fry appeared to rear longer and grow larger in the slough than in the adjacent estuary. Adult chum salmon have been observed spawning in groundwater upwelling areas in the upper portion of the reactivated slough. These factors indicate that with further study this estuarine restoration technique may be valuable enhancement tool"--Abstract, page vii. |
