"This report has been prepared as part of a larger project whose objective is to develop a framework for the development of an ecosystem integrity and cumulative effects monitoring program for the Peace, Athabasca and Slave river basins. The purpose of this report was to: (1) Review the concepts of ecosystem health and cumulative effects assessment and the underlying framework and practical objectives of these approaches. (2) Critically review the literature on existing population, community and ecosystem-level approaches and associated measurements being used for the assessment of aquatic ecosystem health and cumulative effects and outline the advantages and disadvantages of each. (3) Identify the types of data and information required to adequately assess and monitor aquatic ecosystem health and cumulative effects. (4) Assess the applicability of these approaches and metrics to the Northern River Basins Study and recommend approaches that could potentially be employed to assess and monitor aquatic ecosystem health and cumulative effects within the Northern River Basins"--Report summary.
