| 520 | 3 |a"Zooplankton of Lake 224 in the Experimental Lakes Area was sampled on 46 dates from 1974 to 1978. Thirty-seven taxa of zooplankton were identified. The abundances of all but the rare species are given for each sampling date and for several depth strata. In terms of individuals, Lake 224 zooplankton was dominated by rotifers. They averaged 67% of total number of individuals in the 0-15 m stratum of the 27 m deep lake, whereas calanoid copepodids averaged about 20%. Cyclopoid copepods contributed about 10% to numbers in the 0-15 m stratum but were also found distributed to a significant extent below 15 m. Cladocerans usually contributed 3% or less to numbers. Dominant crustaceans were calanoids (Diaptomus minutus, D. sicilis, Epischura lacustris), cyclopoids (Cyclops bicuspidatus thomasi, Tropocyclops prasinus mexicanus) and cladocerans (Bosmina longirostris, Daphnia galeata mendotae x thorata and Diaphanosoma brathyurum). A compamparison between the zooplankton samples obtained with nets of two different mesh sizes (53, 153 µ) indicated no significant difference in capture of zooplankton by the two mesh sizes except for the smallest organisms, namely the rotifers and copepod nauplii"--Abstract, page iv. |
