Abalone survey in the Estevan Group and Aristazabal Island, May, 1983 / by J.A. Boutillier, W. Carolsfeld, P.A. Breen, and K. Bates.: Fs97-4/1747E-PDF
"This survey was conducted to determine whether northern abalone (Hallotis kamtschatkana) abundance had declined on a part of the British Columbia, Canada, coast. A team of two biologists and a commercial abalone diver measured abalone abundance at 42 sites In the Estevan Group and along the west coast of Aristazabal Island, on the north coast of British Columbia, in May 1983. Overall abalone density had declined, abundance of legal sized abalone had decreased, and pre-recruits were less numerous than during previous surveys In 1979 and 1980. A direct comparison of density at eleven previously surveyed sites showed that the decrease in legal size abalone abundance was significant. The decrease appeared to be 45-55%. A comparison of sites selected by fisheries personnel and commercial fishermen indicated that there was no bias in site selection for the purposes of this comparison"--Abstract, page iv.
