| 520 | 3 |a"A random, stratified trawl survey was conducted in Hecate Strait, British Columbia, Sept 7-Oct 1, 1982, the purpose of which was to provide information regarding the abundance, distribution, and biology of the spiny dogfish (Squalus acanthias). The total biomass of marketable-sized dogfish (>70 cm), for Hecate Strait, between depths of 18 to 183 meters (10-100 fath) was 59,958-±23,317 t, calculated using the area swept between the doors and a catching coefficient of 0.6. The total biomass calculated over the same area using the area swept by the net and a catching coefficient of 1.0 was 102,822-±39,997 t. A total of 11,101 fish were sampled for length and sex, of which 65% were female. Lengths ranged from 51-99 cm for males and from 46-128 cm for females. The majority (97%) were longer than 60 cm. The lengths at 50% maturity calculated for 1673 males and 2910 females were 72.3 cm and 94.2 cm, respectively. This report also presents all biological data collected during the cruise as well as haul locations and catch summaries"--Abstract, page iii. |
