"The general approach is based on the use of an equivalent one-level model for specifications of synoptic scale conditions in the troposhere i.e. independent and coordinated progs for the surface and 500-mb (or total thickness) levels theoretically specify the conditions at other levels. The charts for the other levels may thus be obtained by the application of statistical or model formulae"--Introduction, page [1].
