"The responsibility for carrying out Ice Observing and Reconnaissance was assigned in 1957 to the Basic Weather Division of the Meteorological Branch. In the Arctic Ocean areas west of Boothia Peninsula to Herschel Island and north from the mainland to Lancaster Sound, Ice Observers of the Meteorological Branch, Department of Transport, co-operated with the Royal Canadian Air Force in providing sea ice information for shipping engaged in transporting supplies to Arctic ports for the DEW Line"--Page [ii].
