520 |a"This report provides an initial overview of the key economic sectors that may have a particularly significant impact on the Northern River Basin study area over the next two decades. These sectors, agriculture, energy, forestry and manufacturing, form the current foundation of the northern economy. For the most part these industries operate in markets that are globally rather than locally driven and are thus very dependant on international commodity pricing factors. Agriculture is expected to maintain its regional importance although management practices, production patterns, farm consolidation and demographics are anticipated to change. Similarly, manufacturing is expected to remain relatively stable except for value-added processing in the forest industry. The conventional and non-conventional oil and gas industry (particularly the oilsands) and the forest industry (using presently unallocated forest and value-added processing) appears to offer the greatest opportunities for economic growth in the study area over the next twenty-five years, assuming relatively stable economic conditions"--Report summary.
