5203 |a"In 1984 we began a research program to fulfill the need for stock assessments of nearshore reef-fishes in the Strait of Georgia. The 1987 results from MSA 12 and 13 are presented in this report, and are compared with the 1986 results from the same areas. Research CPUE data were collected by angling with trolling rods and reels, using frozen herring as bait. Three depth intervals (5-40 m, 41-70 m, and 71-100 m) were fished at most sites. CPUE decreased with depth in both areas. There was no difference in CPUE between areas over 5-40 m, but rockfish CPUE was higher in MSA 12 than in MSA 13 over 41-70 m, and total CPUE was higher in MSA 12 over 71-100 m. Quillback rockfish, copper rockfish and lingcod were the dominant species in the catch. Species composition varied with depth and statistical area. The greatest number of species were caught in MSA 12. Proportionately more quillback rockfish were sampled in the research catch than in the sport landings. The size of quillback rockfish increased with depth in both MSA 12 and MSA 13. Quillback rockfish, copper rockfish and lingcod were larger in MSA 12 than in MSA 13. Larger copper rockfish and lingcod and smaller quillback rockfish (over 5-40 m only) were caught during surveys in 1987 than in 1986"--Abstract, page iii.
