"The problem of the disposal of high level radioactive waste is perceived by the Canadian Geoscience Council to be one of the major problems facing both the geoscience community and Canadian society. Because of the high technology of the nuclear power program, the immense costs involved, and the high toxicity of the irradiated fuel waste, the issue is of acute concern to all, and can generate fears that lead to illogical reasoning. The problem is not a simple one to discuss and perhaps because of this open discussions of all the problems are infrequent. The Canadian Geoscience Council (CGC), therefore, organized a Forum in Toronto on October 24, 1978 to consider the Canadian geoscience program as related to this issue.
