520 |a"Fuel switching from diesel to low/zero carbon fuels is a means of reducing GHG emissions from locomotives in the short to medium term. Hydrogen can be a life-cycle low carbon energy carrier if it is produced by renewable energy, and therefore has the potential to reduce GHG emissions in industrial applications such as rail. Modifying a diesel engine to integrate hydrogen in the mix could help switch from diesel to life-cycle low carbon fuel and achieve reductions in GHG and pollutant emissions.
