520 |a"Adverse effects of low environmental oxygen tensions on fish reproduction represents a distinct possibility in the Athabasca and Peace drainages. Species spawning in the late fall and winter would be the most likely to be impacted by low dissolved oxygen (DO) because developing eggs and larvae would be subjected to the full extent of hypoxia during the winter (Giles and van der Zweep 1996). In particular, burbot spawn under the ice in mid- to late-winter, mainly from January to March and their gonadal development occurs in the fall and early winter. The winter habitat of burbot is not well known but it is likely that many move to the tributaries of major rivers (and away from hypoxic conditions) for spawning. It is also probable that some populations reside in the major river channels throughout all or part of the ice-covered period"--Report summary.
