"In February 1954 the Pacific Oceanographic Group received permission from the Commander of the 13th Coast Guard District in Seattle, Washington, to inaugurate a program of bathythermograph observations and surface seawater sampling at both these positions. The first observation at Swiftsure Bank was made on June 17, 1954, and at Umatilla Reef on June 18, 1955. The observations are made by the U.S.C.G. personnel who operate the lightships. Liaison between the Pacific Oceanographic Group and the ships' Commanding Officers is provided by the Chief of the Aids to Navigation Section of the 13th District. This report presents all the data observed to the end of 1956. It is planned to publish subsequent observations in annual volumes"--Introduction, page 1.
