"On 11 June 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the first global influenza (flu) pandemic since 1968. A pandemic is an outbreak of a specific illness in multiple areas covering a vast geographic area. While the world experienced a pandemic that began in 2020 due to a coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), this paper focusses on pandemic influenza. It describes flu viruses and the flu pandemics that have afflicted humankind and discusses the influenza preparedness plans of the WHO as well as Canada"--Introduction, page 1.
