1992 research catch and effort data on nearshore reef-fishes in British Columbia Statistical Area 12 / by K.L. Yamanaka and L.J. Richards.: Fs97-4/2184E-PDF
"As part of a research program in support of stock assessments for nearshore reef-fishes, a hook and line survey was conducted in statistical area 12 (Johnstone Strait) in June 1992. The results are presented in this report, and the 1992 data are compared with data from similar surveys conducted in 1986, 1987 and 1988. Research CPUE data were collected by angling with trolling rods and reels, using frozen herring as bait. Three depth intervals (5-40 m, 41-70 m, and 71-100 m) were fished at most sites. Quillback and total rockfish CPUE were higher at most depth/site locations in the 1992 survey than in the 1986-88 surveys. Quillback rockfish, kelp greenling, yellowtail rockfish and copper rockfish were the dominant species in the catch. Quillback rockfish length increased with depth. Median lengths of quillback and copper rockfish, kelp greenling and lingcod decreased between the 1986-88 surveys and the 1992 survey. Median age of quillback rockfish also decreased between the 1986-88 surveys and the 1992 survey, in part due to the recruitment of a strong 1985 year-class (age 7). This strong year-class accounts for the increase in CPUE between the 1986-88 and 1992 surveys"--Abstract, page iii.
