Coastal biodiversity survey (PAC2024-042) in the Kitkatla Inlet marine conservation targets area : 2024 cruise report / by Carolyn K. Robb [and 15 others].: Fs97-6/3757E-PDF
"From May 14th-June 1st, 2024, Fisheries and Oceans Canada aboard the Canadian Coast Guard Ship Vector partnered with the Gitxaała Nation to conduct a coastal biodiversity survey (PAC2024-042) to characterize intertidal and subtidal biodiversity in Kitkatla Inlet on British Columbia's North coast. This site was identified for protection as part of the Great Bear Sea Marine Protected Area Network in the Northern Shelf Bioregion. Seven nearshore sites were surveyed using a suite of techniques: SCUBA dives, beach seining, drone surveys, environmental DNA (eDNA), wildlife cameras, infauna/epifauna surveys, shoreline debris surveys, and baited remoted underwater video (BRUV) surveys. Each technique detected a unique suite of species, highlighting the complementary nature of the sampling plan. Across all nearshore sites, 104 invertebrate taxa were detected by dive surveys, 57 invertebrate taxa by intertidal biodiversity surveys; 31 fish and 26 invertebrate taxa by BRUVs; and 23 fish and 13 invertebrate taxa by beach seining. BRUV and eDNA surveys were also conducted inside and outside of the Goschen Rockfish Conservation Area (RCA), and water collection for eDNA and microplastics assessments were completed throughout the area. The baseline information collected during this survey will support marine conservation and planning initiatives and contribute to long-term monitoring of these areas"--Abstract, page x.
