"During the summer of 1924 an attempt was made to grow in special cultures such genera of diatoms as were found in seawater taken at any convenient time of day from just beyond the breakwater at the Atlantic Biological Station at St. Andrews, N.B. The purpose of the investigation was to find an explanation for the remarkable maximum which diatoms reach in their growth during the autumn in that locality"--Page [1].
