520 |a"In everything, the ideal is difficult, if not impossible, to achieve. During the Second World War, the Canadian Army, through a variety of written and verbal means, but especially through the Canadian Army Training Memorandum, endeavoured to communicate to young men the archetype of junior officer leadership. Above everything else, the army expected its newly commissioned officers to be paternalistic toward their men, competent in the execution of their duties and beyond reproach in their personal conduct. This was meant to help nascent leaders forge strong and effective teams that performed well in battle (or that executed their sundry duties in a credible manner if committed to a non-combatant role).
