5203 |a"In 1995, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Pacific Biological Station, conducted a study of juvenile chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) productivity in the Cowichan River. This study has been conducted since 1991 and the key components of this ongoing project include: i) enumeration of juvenileoutmigrants, ii) monitoring growth of hatchery and naturally-reared fry, iii) monitoring hatchery releases and interaction between hatchery and naturally-reared fry in the river. Rotary screw traps were used to estimate naturally-reared fry production. Bismarck Brown dyed hatchery juveniles were released above the trap and mark-recapture results were used to expand trap catches to estimate total production. Estimated production of naturally-reared juvenile chinook for 1994 brood year was 169,828. Total hatchery releases of chinook fry and smolts were approximately 1.6 million. The interaction between hatchery and naturally-reared juveniles was believed to be minimal since most of the hatchery fish moved out of the river in just a few days after release"--Abstract, page v.
