"The present document is a compilation of twenty-three stock status reports that describe important results and main conclusions pertaining to the conservation and management of twenty-two stocks of groundfish, anadromous fish, pelagic fish, shellfish, and marine mammal resources in the Northwest Atlantic, environmental conditions, and an overview of the regional stock assessment process in the Newfoundland Region DFO in 1996. These reports provide biological advice to the Fisheries Resource Conservation Council, in the case of groundfish, and to fisheries managers which allows them to formulate advice on conservation and to develop management plans for these resources"--Abstract, page iv.
