| 520 | 3 |a"Fisheries and Oceans Canada conducts an annual ecosystem survey in the St. Lawrence Estuary and northern Gulf. The survey has several objectives: to estimate the abundance and biomass of groundfish and invertebrates; to assess physical, chemical, and biological (phytoplankton and zooplankton) oceanographic conditions; to evaluate the biodiversity of species found near the seabed; to monitor the pelagic ecosystem over time; and to collect samples for various research projects. In 2025, the survey was conducted between August 5 to September 8 aboard the Canadian Coast Guard Ship (CCGS) John Cabot. During this survey, 159 trawl tows were successfully completed. In addition, 68 vertical water column profiles were carried out to characterize oceanographic conditions, and 52 zooplankton samples were also collected. This report presents the results of successful trawl tow catches of the 2025 survey. A total of 79 fish taxa and 194 invertebrate taxa were identified during this survey. Historical perspectives (catch rates, spatial distribution, length frequency) are presented for 31 taxa. These fishery-independent data will be used for several stock assessments, including Atlantic Cod (Gadus morhua), Redfish (Sebastes mentella and S. fasciatus), Greenland Halibut (Reinhardtius hippoglossoides), Atlantic Halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus), Witch Flounder (Glyptocephalus cynoglossus), Capelin (Mallotus villosus), and Northern Shrimp (Pandalus borealis). Water temperatures at 300 m have decreased further since the record high of 2022, falling from 7.1 °C in 2022 to 6.5 °C, but remain warm. Temperatures at 150 m and 200 m, however, have increased slightly since 2024. The minimum temperature of the cold intermediate layer has decreased slightly compared to 2024, dropping from the 4th to the 8th warmest since 1985. For the first time since 2019, surface water temperatures were on average close to normal during the July-August and May-August periods"--Abstract, page iv. |
